Day 2 Daily Report from Brathay
Day 2 started much like Day 1 but without the Media and official send-off. We started an hour earlier at 9am help reduce the amount of time we would be running in the heat of the day. The weather was almost identical to Day 1, but hotter in the first two hours with the sun beating down. This takes its longer term toll over the duration of a marathon. Then, as we crossed Newby Bridge and headed back on the return portion of the run the cloud cover came. Later on it rained, the cooling effect of which was welcome by everyone. Not surprisingly the Hills were in the same place as before, although there was speculation that a couple of new one’s had been added.
We were wiser but a little wearier today; a little apprehensive knowing it was going to be a day like the previous day. There is considerable respect for the course having now run the hills in the heat. Steve Edwards continued running strongly with an impressive 3:36. Second once again was George Russell in 4:14, while third place went to Phil Roberts in 4:29. The next four runners ran almost the entire distance together. Running with others is a big bonus on a marathon course, especially this one where you spend a large amount of time running in the countryside. It is a beautiful picturesque countryside, a mix of rolling pastures, stone walls and woodlands, lakes and ponds, stone cottages and 11 marathoners. Although the second half is characterised by much more traffic, and passes through the larger towns, it is still scenic and still goes through a lot of forested areas.

As in Day 1, the bottles (and food for two of the runners) were set up along the course by Teresa, while today both Amy and John of Active-Physio provided ongoing support during the race driving or cycling alongside the runners on numerous occasions and providing hands-on support when necessary. Amy has let us know she is keeping a running tally of all the different types of treatments they are giving, and for which muscle groups etc, how many ultra-sounds, compresses used and so on. We will have these final figures for you in the Final day’s report.
Once again several of us sat in the river to let it do its magic with our muscles. And almost everyone took the opportunity to have a massage from John or Amy. After many conversations over cups of tea or juices, we got ready for dinner (at 6:45 pm), and then settled into our routines gearing up for Day 3. The good news today is that we all finished despite the heat, and we are in good spirits, despite the aching muscles.
We look forward to getting # 3 under our belt tomorrow. The forecast is for more sun and heat tomorrow. We’re getting used to this!
